A couples intensive in Redding, California

The couples intensive brings the two of you to Redding for concentrated time with a team of licensed clinicians. Because we work as a team, more than one clinician knows your story and adds to your care while you are here.

Who this intensive is for

This intensive is for couples where trauma or burnout has come into the relationship, whether it started with one partner or both. Partners and family take part during your stay. Here in Redding, we also work with first responder families.

How we work with couples

Our founder, Jill Shepherd Piercy Clark, LMFT, uses Gottman, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Internal Family Systems and DBT in her clinical work. In counseling sessions, a licensed marriage and family therapist helps you look at the thoughts, emotions and behaviors that affect your relationship.

ART, short for Accelerated Resolution Therapy, is an evidence based approach that uses bilateral stimulation. It typically begins within the first few days of your stay. Treatment can start with sensations in the body instead of a story or an image.

Jill is master certified in ART. Candyce Braker, our clinical director, is a certified ART trainer, and both hold master's level licenses. Our team brings years of experience treating first responders.

Skills you take home

Each intensive includes skills building. For couples, that work covers love languages, boundaries, how you communicate with each other, and how to identify and express what you feel. Nutrition education is part of the stay as well.

Identity and spiritual connection

Part of the work looks at identity and at spiritual connection, whether that means connecting with God or with something larger than yourself. Couples of other faiths are welcome too.

Neurofeedback and The Resiliency Lab

We have offered neurofeedback since 2018. Those sessions focus on brain regulation and emotional regulation.

Every retreat guest also uses The Resiliency Lab while on site. The Lab includes PEMF, gut health work, red light therapy, and BrainTap with a vibration plate to help rewire your nervous system.

When one partner is a first responder

If one of you serves as a first responder, the partner joins on site for three or four days toward the end of the responder's time with us. More about that program is on our first responder retreat page.

Measuring what changes

We track progress with the PCL-5 for posttraumatic stress, the PHQ-9 for depression, and the GAD-7 for anxiety. Each one is collected at the start of the intensive, at discharge, and again at follow up. Results are charted for each client.

Aftercare

Four aftercare sessions follow the intensive, by video or in person, whichever you prefer. Each one is a therapy session with a member of our clinical team.
